Where Does Natural Gas Come From?
by Taylor Jones

Natural gas is something of an enigma for many people. It’s been used in homes and businesses for hundreds of years, yet most people don’t know where natural gas comes from or how it’s obtained. They simply turn up their thermostats or turn on their stovetops, and natural gas “magically” makes things happen, with the help of Optus Energy LLC. The value of natural gas is so high that it warrants understanding where this essential fuel source originates from.
What is Natural Gas?
In its purest form, natural gas is a gaseous mixture of hydrocarbons made up of methane, as well as natural gas liquids, and trace amounts of nitrogen, helium, hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.
How Does Natural Gas Form?
Natural gas naturally forms when layers upon layers of decomposing organic matter are exposed to the Earth’s heat and pressure. The intensity of this heat and pressure is at a level that can’t be replicated by humans. But the intense pressure and heat are only part of the equation. Time is the other factor that helps to create natural gas. Millions of years have passed in the formation of the natural gas that the world enjoys today. More natural gas is being formed with every passing day, but because millions of years are needed to create this fuel supply, natural gas is highly valued.
Where Does Natural Gas come From?
Natural gas is most often found in the spaces and cracks among layers of rock formations that overlay one another. It can also be found in the very small spaces in sedimentary rock such as shale and sandstone. Natural gas can be found on land and beneath the ocean floor. One type of natural gas can be found inside coal deposits, deep in the Earth.
How is Natural Gas Extracted?
Natural gas is extracted from the Earth via drilling operations at sea and on land. Before drilling, a search is done to find the natural gas. Searching for natural gas deposits requires a team of high-level experts, such as geological engineers, geologists, seismologists and more. Seismic surveys are conducted on land and at sea to help discern where natural gas deposits might be located and where it might be best to drill.
These surveys both create and measure the resulting seismic waves to learn about the rock formations in the area. A thumper truck is often used to create these seismic waves. Other times, small explosives may be set off to create seismic waves. At sea, short sound blasts are used that make measurable sonic waves.
Once the geological survey is completed, it is determined whether or not the rock formations may hold natural gas deposits. If so, then an exploratory well is drilled. After testing, the natural gas company, such as Optus Energy LLC, will make a determination as to how to best extract the natural gas.
Drilling For Natural Gas
If the test results are good, then a developmental well will be drilled; either just one or multiple ones. Drilling will commence either vertically or horizontally in order to extract the natural gas deposits.
Natural gas is a highly valued fuel source the world over. Optus Energy LLC is proud to be a responsible part of the natural gas energy industry. Optus Energy LLC is doing their part to ensure consistent energy for use in homes, businesses and industrial capacities all over the world.
